My Roomie Story (& Giveaway)

In honor of the release of the novel Roomies by Sara Zarr and Tara Altebrando, Little, Brown has asked us reviewers to post our own story of having a roommate. Not only that, but I’m including a giveaway for a copy of Roomies at the end of this post!

Here’s my Roomie story:

I’ve had to share a room with my younger sister, Melissa, my whole life. Some info about my sis: she’s two years younger than me and we look nothing alike. Other than that, our personalities are different and we listen to different kind of music.

When I was younger, I used to get very upset when my sister used my things. Since we shared a room, there was nowhere else for me to put my possessions, except in my room (which we shared). My sister knew I would get upset if she even touched my things, so she decided to wait when I was out with friends to use my things. I would come back to find my toys scattered around the room and my sister pretending she hadn’t touched anything.

As we got older, we stopped caring about using each other’s things. Instead, we focused on how little room we actually had. At first, we had bunk beds. Then we asked our dad to take the beds a part, but then that took up too much space. Finally, we went back to bunk beds. Not only that, but for a good three years, my sister and I would rearrange our room two times a year because we got bored of the layout. And each time, our mom would get mad because we shoved all of our items into the hallway when we moved things around. We even moved our bed and bookshelves around, even when our parents told us not to move the heavy stuff around. Our motto: if you want something done, do it yourself.

Looking back, it’s not bad sharing a room with my sister. There were the bad times, like when my mom told me to read in the hallway since my sister didn’t want the light in the room on. There were the good times, like I had someone else to feed and help clean the tanks of the goldfish and hermit crabs.

In the end, sharing a room has taught me a lot: to share, to cooperate and to learn to work together. This is my roomie story; even though I’m in college, it still hasn’t ended…

Alright, I wanna hear your roomie stories now! Tell me yours in the comments (:

Also, Sara & Tara are going on a tour for the release of their book! Here are the tour dates:

Also, thanks to Little, Brown, I’m giving away a copy of Roomies! This giveaway is U.S. only (no P.O. boxes!), and will end on January 13 at 11:59 EST. You will get an extra entry if you leave me a roomie story to read!

Music Monday: Boys in Books Are Better

Hello lovelies (:

I happened to stumble upon this video the other night and wanted to share it with all of you. It’s possible that some of you have seen this already, but if you haven’t, please do take five minutes to listen to this song – I PROMISE you will love it! This song is not just cute and adorable, but also my life (and I’m sure also yours).

Because really, what isn’t amazing about music and fictional book characters?

Song: Boys in Books are Better by Carrie Hope Fletcher

Song Suggestion: The Summer I Turned Pretty

(***Contains  possible spoilers. I suggest you proceed if you have read the novel).

Towards the end of the novel, Susannah’s secret comes out and all the children are devestated (who wouldn’t be?). Belly confronts Conrad about her love for him and Conrad tries to push her away but he needs her. Yeah, my summary isn’t that good but you guys know what part I’m talking about, right? But look, I found a song that reminds me of that moment!

Some lyrics:

Cause I’m not afraid to fall
If you’re the one who catches me
Tell me that you’ll be there when I’m
About to lose it all
You’re the one who helps me see
That sometimes it’s ok to fall

I know it’s the Jonas Brothers, but please do not let the artist get in the way! Thoughts?!

If I Stay Song Suggestion

(***Contains spoilers. I suggest you proceed if you have read the novel).

There’s a part in If I Stay at the end where Adam tells Mia to stay. It’s full of emotion and love and everything. I’m sure you know what part I’m talking about so I’m just going to get to the song. I feel this song relates to that exact part, telling of the emotions Adam is going through:

Some lyrics:

Beautiful, one of a kind.
You’re something special babe,
And you don’t even realize
That your my hearts desire.

Part of the chorus:

Cause you’re not the only one,
Who’s ever felt this way.
Don’t let the world cave in,
Just tell me that you’ll stay.

Granted, not every part fits but I feel that most of the song just screams that moment at me. Thoughts?! Leave them below!

Delirium Song Suggestion

(***Contains spoilers. I suggest you only proceed if you have finished Delirium)

If you’ve read some of my other blog posts you’ll notice I mention a few artists here and there. A few of them are well-known and others aren’t even signed to a record label. Josh Golden and Savannah Outen recently came out with a song called ‘Tonight With You.’ The first time I listened to it, I was basking in awe at the fact the two friends made a song together. The second time I listened to it, I only saw Alex and Lena in my mind. I’m being serious.

This song mostly relates to the very end of the novel. It’s the part where Lena is strapped to the bed and is hoping/waiting for Alex to come and rescue her from everything so they can run away into the Wilds. It does relate to other parts of the novel, though. When Josh sings, imagine it from Alex’s POV and when Savannah sings imagine it from Lena’s POV.

Let’s examine the song, shall we?

(Josh is in blue, Savannah is in purple, both is in red)

These days go by so quickly
Feels like I’m losing my mind
And we are running out of time

The two only have the summer until Lena has to go through the procedure. They spend every free moment they can with each other and all of their time is going by too fast.

These days never felt so lonely
I try but no one knows me
They all just think I’m crazy

Whenever Alex isn’t around, she really doesn’t have anyone. Hana and she had a fight which caused them to ignore each other for most of the summer. Lena can’t tell her family because it’s against the law to feel the way she does. Lena is practically on her own when she isn’t with Alex.

Girl, just tell me why we can’t go now
Boy, why can’t we just break out?

At first Alex wasn’t sure if it was right for them to just runaway, but I think in truth he wanted to leave together then. Lena is just sick of living a lie and wants to break out as soon as she can and get away.

Well everything could change tonight
We could pack up, and leave this whole town behind
You are the key to my only way out
There’s nothing more I care about

And nothings gonna change my mind
I’ll feel this way as long as I’m alive
There is no turning back
Tonight is all we have
So let’s make this last

Lena is trapped just waiting for Alex to come. If he does, everything will change tonight whether they make it out into the Wilds or not. Savannah sings ‘You are the key to my only way out…” This line stands out to me because with Lena, Alex really is her only way out. Not only was he the person to show her the Wilds, but also the guy she fell in love with. Without she wouldn’t be leaving. The chorus continues and says both of their love for each other will stay with them ‘as long as I’m alive.” There is no way to change what they both decide and no matter what happens, they are going to make the best of it.

Don’t bother saying goodbye
They don’t need to know why
Cause we are running out of time
(we’re running out of time)

There is no way for Lena to say goodbye because she knows people would tear them apart and change them since love is a ‘disease.’ Every second that passes brings them closer to Lena’s operation which will change her.

I need you and no one else
Boy I don’t want you to go
I want you all to myself

Alex really doesn’t have anyone or anything else to live for besides Lena. When Lena is trapped in her room, she doesn’t want him to leave her on her own since there’s a chance he won’t be able to save her. Because if he does she’ll go through the procedure and lose all feelings of love for anyone.

If I’d have known,
then I would trade everything just to be by your side

You should know,
that I would lose anything just be with you tonight

Alex doesn’t have much but I feel that he would give up what he owns to be with Lena. And Lena is losing everything she has ever known to run away with him.

Tonight with you

Josh and Savannah’s voices are in perfect harmony with each other’s and I feel that Alex and Lena have the same harmony in everything. The last line is beautiful, just like their relationship. Both of them really only have that night but at least they have each other.

Haunted = New Moon

Who is a fan of Taylor Swift?! I am!

If you are not, then you should still read this post (it’s quite interesting). If you are, then you might have already noticed what I’m about to talk about. Her recent album has a song called ‘Haunted’ on it. Now have any of you really listened to the lyrics?! Yes? No? Well, the story of the song is the exact story of New Moon by Stephenie Meyer.

Let’s examine the song, shall we?!

You and I walk a fragile line
I have known it all this time
but I never thought I’d live to see it break

Bella and Edward walk a fragile line because he is a vampire and she’s not (duh). He thirsts for her blood and has to fight his temptation everyday. Bella’s hopeful though and thinks that this issue won’t break them apart because of their love for one another.

It’s getting dark and it’s all too quiet
And I can’t trust anything now
And it’s coming over you like it’s all a big mistake

This part represents the days after her disastrous birthday party. After Jasper attacks her, she realizes it isn’t as easy as her mind wants it to be. It was a mistake that she cut herself and that Jasper attacked her, but Edward is taking it harder.

Oh, I’m holding my breath
Won’t loose you again
something’s made your eyes go cold

Edward and Bella are in the woods and he says that he’s leaving her.

Come on, come on, don’t leave me like this
I thought I had you figured out
Something’s gone terribly wrong
You’re all I wanted
Come on, come on, don’t leave me like this
I thought I had you figured out
Can’t breathe whenever you’re gone
Can’t turn back now, I’m haunted

Bella knows that she loves him and she’ll be nothing without Edward. With all the things they had been through together, she thinks she knew him. Bella thought she figured Edward out (or at least most of him). When he leaves, she knows she won’t be able to carry on without him because Edward is her other half.

Stood there and watched you walk away
From everything we had
But I still mean every word I said to you

Bella tries to follow Edward through the woods but fails miserably. Bella does mean every word she said to him because it’s true. She really does love him and would do anything for Edward.

He would try to take away my pain
And he just might make me smile
But the whole time I’m wishing he was you instead

The ‘he’ is Jacob. Jacob knows Bella is hurting because of Edward and tries to take her pain away. Bella smiles and starts to become herself again with Jacob, but her heart still bleeds from the wound Edward has left. No matter how much time she spends with Jake to make things better, she secretly wishes she was spending time with Edward instead.

Oh, I’m holding my breath
Won’t see you again
something keeps me holding on to nothing

Bella hopes that she will see Edward again, but she knows that he’s not coming back. Still, she holds onto him and all the times they spent together. Even though Edward tells her to forget about him, she doesn’t.

Come on, come on, don’t leave me like this
I thought I had you figured out
Something’s gone terribly wrong
You’re all I wanted
Come on, come on, don’t leave me like this
I thought I had you figured out
Can’t breathe whenever you’re gone
Can’t turn back now, I’m haunted

The best part about this song is that Bella is literally being ‘haunted’ by Edward. Okay, so not really being haunted by him, but she keeps seeing him. Every time Bella does something reckless Edward shows up to tell her to stay safe. Edward isn’t really there, but her mind is making him up because she misses him so much. Bella is haunted by Edward.

Come on, come on, don’t leave me like this
I thought I had you figured out
Something’s gone terribly wrong
Won’t finish what you started

Come on, come on, don’t leave me like this
I thought I had you figured out
Can’t breathe whenever you’re gone
Can’t go back, I’m haunted

One of the lines is ‘won’t finish what you started.’ Bella and Edward fell in love, and because of that there should be more. Bella also wanted Edward to someday change her into a vampire so she could be with him forever. By him leaving, Edward isn’t finishing what he started.

You and I walk a fragile line
I have known it all this time
Never ever thought I’d see it break.
Never thought I’d see it…

At the end of the song, Taylor breaks off the last line not really finishing the story. There’s more too it, but it hasn’t happened yet to be told. Bella knows that her story with everything hasn’t ended even with Edward gone. The ‘…’ leaves the audience guessing in both the song and story.

Oh gosh, right?! ‘Haunted’ = New Moon! Leave your thoughts below!

Matched Song Suggestions

Two Rebels by Honor Society

Some lyrics:

What should we do now
that we’re caught in the middle of the spotlight?
I can feel your butterflies
If we kiss will they fly away?

We had our whole life scripted
But we tossed it to the side
Those words can’t tell us nothing
Come on baby let’s improvise

Whoa-oh do you trust me enough if we become two rebels?
Whoa-oh we’re just like outlaws on the run all we have is each other
Whoa-oh we’re gonna eat sleep breathe our love
Would you become a rebel with me?

When I listen to this song, I don’t actually picture it from the POV of Cassia or Ky. The lyrics just fit with the character’s lives. They are being watched by the Society and even though it doesn’t say one of them gets butterflies, the attraction between Cassia and Ky goes stronger day by day. The lyrics ‘I can feel your butterflies / If we kiss will they fly away?’ are asking that if they take things to the next step, will they finally just fall for each other already? Gosh! Please tell me that my explanation is making sense 😛

The other lines relate to how they break away from the lies the Society is telling them. They also start making their own choices, which is the ‘improvising’ in the song. They are no longer being controlled by others. Because Cassia and Ky are the ones who rebel against the Society, they are the ‘Two Rebels.’

Robot by Miley Cyrus

Some lyrics:

But the sound of the steel
and the crush, and the grind
it will scream who am I, to decide my life
But in time it will die, they’ll be nothing left inside
Just rusted metal that was never even mine

I would scream, but I’m just this hollow shell
Waiting here, begging please
set me free, so I can feel

Stop trying to live my life for me
I need to breath, I’m not your robot
Stop telling me I’m a part of the big machine
I’m breaking free, can’t you see
I can’t love, I can’t speak
Without somebody else operating me
You gave me eyes, and now I see
I’m not your robot, I’m just me

All this time, I’ve been misled
There was nothing but cross-wires in my head
I’ve been taught to think that what I
feel doesn’t matter at all
till they say it’s real

This song is more of a Cassia oriented song. Again, it has the theme of other people (the Society) controlling this person (Cassia). That if they build someone with parts of others, they are taking away that person. Cassia’s actions are based on how the Society and others want and expect her to act. By listening to her heart and going against what she’s been taught, she is ‘breaking free’ from those who tried to build her into something she isn’t.

I hope you guys agree with me on these two songs! My tastes aren’t anything like most others, but that’s fine with me! At least there is a variety of song suggestions now J Tell me what you think below!
