Review: the Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare
Summary: When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London’s Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos. Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa’s power for his own.
Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm’s length . . . everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world. . . . and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.
I love Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instrument series, so I was ecstatic about her coming with a new series! Amazingly, I won an ARC copy from Wondergirl112 (http://www.theherethenowthebooks.com/) by making cookies with runes for my contest entry. It was so worth the mess!
I really enjoyed Tessa’s character. I have to admit I probably like her better than Clary (Mortal Instruments). Tessa is a pretty strong girl that knows how to use her head. One of her main flaws is that she is easily trusting. But most main characters have flaws, which tie into the story. And because Tessa is easily trusting, a twist I did not expect happens at the end of this book.
Will is the sexy, sarcastic bad boy. But wait! You also have Jem who is the good looking, overall good person. To me, they are complete opposites but alike on the inside. I swear both of them will grab girls heart’s just like they grab Tessa’s! And because both of them are so amazing, I am still undecided of which team I am on. I guess I’m just gonna have to wait for the sequel XD
The idea of this book is truly original. And I thought her first book was amazing! The Clockwork Angel brings you to a whole new level in the world of Nephilim and Downworlders (even though it’s a prequel to the Mortal Instruments)! The world Cassandra Clare creates is seductive, making you want to know every little detail.
This story has a little bit of everything: Hot guys, brave girls, vampires, etc. There is enough action in it to entice guys to read it, and swoon-worthy males that we girls can gush over. Oh yeah, you’ll also have plenty of laughs. This book is hysterical!
A definite read. I don’t care what you’re reading August 31! Drop that and pick this up!
